Grey Fantail
A New Beginning
Sometimes the birds we remember most arrive at exactly the right moment.
For me, that bird was a Grey Fantail.
I first met this little bird at the end of the most difficult time of my life.
Life had been heavy for a long time, and I was slowly finding my way forward again. Things weren't good, but for the first time in a while, I could begin to see a little light ahead.
One quiet morning, while sitting in my parents' garden on their acreage in northern Tasmania, I noticed a tiny bird fluttering among the trees.
It was a young Grey Fantail that had only recently left the nest.
It was small, fluffy and uncertain, fluttering from branch to branch as it discovered the world around it. Every movement seemed filled with curiosity. It wasn't graceful yet, but it was brave enough to keep trying.
I sat quietly and watched.
There was something deeply comforting about that tiny bird.
Without knowing it, the little fantail reflected exactly how I felt.
We were both stepping into something new.
Neither of us knew exactly what lay ahead, but somehow that didn't matter. The future no longer felt quite so frightening. Instead, it felt full of possibility.
As I photographed the young bird, I realised that new beginnings rarely arrive all at once. They begin quietly - with small steps, gentle moments, and the courage to keep moving forward.
Watching that little Grey Fantail reminded me that life has a way of beginning again, even after seasons we never thought we'd make it through.
I still think about that little fledgling from time to time. Whenever I see a Grey Fantail now, I'm reminded that hope often arrives in the smallest, quietest ways.

This young Grey Fantail later inspired my August Feather & Perch Bird Postcard, created as part of the monthly Bird Postcard Club.
